Between Sacred and Secular: Renewal at the Heart of the Neighborhood

Located in the Shapira neighborhood of South Tel Aviv, the Orot Shaul Yeshiva occupies a sloped site with significant level differences between two parallel streets. The existing building, originally constructed as a synagogue in the early 1960s, no longer accommodated the growing needs and activities of the community. The project was initiated to expand the Beit Midrash, add classrooms, and improve the building's acoustic and functional performance, while establishing a stronger spiritual and community presence within the neighborhood. A central design challenge was to create a clear and accessible connection between the existing structure and the new addition while responding to the site's complex topography. The architectural intervention introduces a contemporary façade defined by vertical louvers, a rounded corner that creates a softer relationship with the street, and a transparent ground floor that strengthens the building's connection to the public realm. The program includes an enlarged Beit Midrash, flexible multipurpose spaces, and an active rooftop.
