Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Cultural Center
The Mandel Center in Jaffa, a long-standing community and cultural anchor, required a comprehensive renewal to meet contemporary standards of accessibility, functionality, and user experience. The building had served the community for years, but its main public spaces, including the auditorium and the library, had become outdated and required significant renewal. The renewal process began in 2019 with the renovation of the auditorium and continued in 2021 with the redesign of the library. The auditorium underwent a complete visual and acoustic renewal: slatted wood panels were introduced across the walls and ceiling, creating a warm character along with integrated acoustic treatment. The seating was replaced, and a new architectural lighting system creates a more intimate and professional performance environment. The library was redesigned as an open and accessible learning environment. Existing partitions were removed to improve flow and visual continuity, and a new shelving system created bright, flexible spaces with dedicated areas for study and activity. The lobby was converted into an informal community lounge, and the program was expanded with a technology study room, a workshop room, and a dedicated early childhood area. A small "nostalgia corner," incorporating original furniture preserved from the center, maintains a tangible connection to the building's history alongside its contemporary community uses.
