A Different Kind of Hebrew Ulpan

The Neve Tzedek Hebrew Ulpan is located within a historic 1920s building designated for preservation and occupies part of the structure as a center for Hebrew language and cultural studies for new immigrants. The project required a careful intervention to adapt the existing spaces to contemporary educational needs and changing approaches to language learning. The aim was to transform a conventional educational setting into a welcoming and informal learning environment, combining the functionality of classrooms with a more domestic sense of comfort and encouraging social interaction beyond formal lessons. The renovation focused on creating a flexible and adaptable learning environment. Two large classrooms are equipped with acoustic partitions, allowing them to be divided or combined according to different teaching formats, alongside smaller classrooms intended for more focused study. The former institutional lobby was transformed into an informal lounge with a coffee area, creating a shared social space for students between classes. Graphic design is integrated throughout the project as an architectural element. Walls incorporate Hebrew typography, texts drawn from traditional sources, and wayfinding graphics, reinforcing the connection between language, place, and local culture. Modular furniture, patterned flooring, and a landscaped courtyard complete the learning environment, creating a contemporary interior that maintains a dialogue with the historic character of the building.
