Preserving a Glorious Past in the Montefiore Neighborhood
At 9 Beit Shammai Street, in the heart of Tel Aviv's historic Montefiore neighborhood, stands a building with a rich past, built in 1936 adjacent to the famous well house of the "Montefiore Orchard". The building, which originally served as a WIZO women's club and a center for community gatherings, underwent many incarnations, experienced prolonged neglect, and suffered partial destruction, including the dismantling of its original wooden roof for reinforcement works. As part of a comprehensive and meticulous restoration and conservation project that was successfully completed, its unique remains were rehabilitated - including wooden windows and doors decorated in a local Art Deco style and painted concrete tiles - and the building was returned to active public use, while strictly preserving its original character.
A Renewed Community Space with a Historical Atmosphere
The conversion and renovation project gave the historical building a renewed purpose as an inviting and multi-purpose community space. The design included adapting the interior spaces to modern needs by creating modular seating areas, work desks, quiet corners, and accessibility ramps. Alongside the accurate restoration of the carpentry items, flooring, and outer shell according to the strict documentation file, the project also included the environmental development of the building's courtyard and seating terraces made of wood decking, which transformed the entire complex into an urban meeting place harmoniously combining architectural heritage with contemporary functionality.
